What Is a Living Lab, and Why Does It Matter?

The goal is not to turn residents into research subjects. It is to create a respectful learning environment in which lived experience helps shape better communities.

Research in the real world

A Living Lab is not simply a research project conducted inside a building. It is a real-world environment where residents, researchers, practitioners, students, organizations, and community partners can learn together through participation, observation, testing, and continuous improvement.

In EverWell™, the Living Lab approach is intended to help translate research into the design, programmes, services, and everyday experience of community life. Rather than separating research from implementation, it creates a structured way for each to inform the other.

Living Lab versus conventional research

Conventional research may take place under controlled conditions, focus on a defined intervention, or conclude when a study ends. A Living Lab operates within the complexity of ordinary life. It recognizes that homes, relationships, routines, services, technology, and environments interact.

This does not mean the work is informal. Strong Living Labs require clear questions, ethical practices, appropriate methods, consent, governance, and respect for participants. Their distinctive value is that learning occurs in the setting where ideas are meant to work.

Co-design and participation

Co-design means involving the people affected by a decision in shaping it. In a Living Lab, residents and community participants are not treated only as sources of data. Their experience can help identify the right questions, interpret what is happening, and refine solutions.

Participation must be meaningful. It should be accessible, voluntary, and proportionate. People should understand what is being explored, how information will be used, and how the learning may influence future decisions.

Learning from lived experience

A programme may appear successful because attendance is high while participants experience barriers that are invisible in the numbers. A shared space may look beautiful but remain underused because it is poorly located, too noisy, or socially uncomfortable. A technology may function technically while creating frustration in practice.

Lived experience reveals these gaps. It helps distinguish what a design or programme promises from what people can actually use. This is especially important in ageing-related work, where assumptions about ability, preference, and support can easily replace the diversity of real lives.

Testing ideas in real settings

A Living Lab can support small, staged experiments before larger commitments are made. A walking programme, shared meal, wayfinding system, mobility service, room layout, technology platform, or community partnership can be tested, observed, and improved.

The aim is not constant novelty. It is disciplined learning. Some ideas will work. Others will need adjustment. A mature Living Lab makes it possible to learn without treating every imperfect result as failure.

Evaluation and knowledge translation

Evaluation asks whether the work is producing the intended effects and for whom. Depending on the question, a Living Lab might examine participation, belonging, mobility, confidence, service use, environmental experience, or the practical operation of a programme.

Knowledge translation then turns learning into usable forms: design principles, operating guidance, publications, training, policy insights, or recommendations for future projects. Without translation, useful learning can remain trapped inside one initiative.

Ethics, privacy, and dignity

Research must never become the organizing identity of a community. Residents are people living their lives, not permanent subjects. Participation should be voluntary, privacy protected, and data practices transparent. Research activity should not make a home feel clinical or intrusive.

The strongest Living Lab approach is quiet, respectful, and responsive. It learns with people rather than extracting from them.

HAWIC and the EverWell™ blueprint

THRVE's collaboration with Niagara College's Healthy Aging and Wellness Innovation Centre is helping develop the Phase 0 Living Lab blueprint for EverWell™. The work is intended to strengthen the evidence, partnership, governance, student-learning, and knowledge-translation foundations of the model.

This early work does not predetermine the final community. It creates a more credible foundation for decisions that may follow.
